Lester Martin speaks to LSU students

We were privileged to have a lecture by Lester Martin. Here is the lecture (in 3 parts).

Team Crichton Building

So, today we had our 2nd client meeting. Surprisingly it went really well. The town house idea was accepted as one of the the best program options we presented. The amount of work that we did was really influential in the response of the client. He appreciated our effort to research and gain knowledge on the market that would best fit into program. Team work is the name of the game in the case. GO TEAM CRICHTON

Team Webb Building: Thursday, December 16, 2010

It was another warm day as we began getting ready and found we had some pesky creatures eating our bread, which was not good. We headed back to Main Street to continue the beginnings of the design process and began the day with a morning meeting discussing some strategies of running the second client meeting. We sat down with our group and reviewed some design ideas and what we wanted to show the clients. We then asked for Marsha to help us with how to approach our meeting. We worked until we broke for another meeting and then headed to lunch. Today we decided to venture into Skippi's for lunch and some delicious blue bell ice cream and shakes. We played on a 10 cent pinball machine in the arcade of Skippi's (it was awesome). We came back and began working on the meeting and finished some final ideas before meeting with our clients at 3:00pm. We had a good meeting and are going to be able to integrate more of what the clients want into a finalized design idea. Overall today was a good and productive day and are able to take a bigger step into the final design. It was a long day and we are ready to be home eat and are looking forward to the next few days to create a fantastic finished product.

Team Webb Hardware 12-15

Started the day off with warm weather- heck yea! But really the weather has gotten warmer compared to last nights low of 22 and everybody’s spirits are up. We had a lot of drawings and stuff to finish before our critiques this afternoon. It seemed that lunch time came in no time to everyone. After lunch our group took a visit to our building to obtain some final measurements and was able to get to the roof- it looked like they were up to nothing but mischief because our tape measure was flapping in the wind like a kite. Everyone was able to get their work done before the crit. During the crit we were faced with many options that we could move forward with and now that it’s the end of the day we get to head to Professor Desmond’s lecture on the history of Minden. After the lecture we plan to get a bite to eat at a local place and then get back at it. Peace.

Team Imperial Hotel Day 3

The measurement phase of the documentation is complete. The existing drawings of the structure are finished and we are very happy to be finished working in the pigeon graveyard. We were able to explore more of the ground floor today. We hope to access the basement soon. Our group had a critique with Frank and Marsha this afternoon. They raised a lot of questions that we need to solve. We have a lot to work on before our client meeting tomorrow. Professor Desmond is here to lecture on the history of Minden. Our group has decided to work late tonight to design a solution for the large alleyway and all the additions to the existing structure.

Crichton Building 12/15

We started the day by finishing our individual designs for the different layout scenarios for the space. We further developed our argument for the space and what would be the best use. Our building was still very mysterious to us because we could not find any documentation on when it was built or exactly what the original use of the building was. through a series of investigations and conversations with different members of the town we were able to conclude that the upstairs of the Crichton building was used for the Webster Parish Health Center. While we originally believed the upstairs to have been residential, the medical use of the building provides conclusions we were unable to make about the layout. The bottom of the building seems to have consistently used for commercial businesses such as law offices and insurance companies.

We prepared all of our designs for our review. After the review, we realized that the designs need to be focused more around the comfort of the buyer than around efficiency housing with minimal space for living. We have to prepare our presentation for our client tomorrow so that hopefully we will be able to go ahead with our apartment designs versus the original boarding home proposition.
